*************************

On August 21, 1935, Benny Goodman's Orchestra, weary from many weeks on the road, arrived in Los Angeles, the final stop on their tour.  There were scheduled to perform at the Palomar Ballroom downtown.  Still relatively unknown to the public, the Goodman band had left New York in July, and had been making their way across the continent playing a series of one-nighters, often to nearly empty houses where the band outnumbered the audience.  More than once, Goodman proposed turning the bus around and heading back.  What happened that night altered the course of jazz history.  An estimated ten thousand fans - who had been tuning in to Goodman's weekly radio broadcasts - showed up to hear the band.  The members of the Benny Goodman Orchestra became overnight stars, and Goodman himself became the first pop icon.  August 21, 1935 is often considered to be the birth of the Swing Era.  What Goodman thought was going to be the end…was just the beginning.
